I hope you didn’t think the business minded Jessica Simpson would be pregnant for nine months and not find a way to turn it into a fashionable business. Well, if you thought she won’t, you were wrong! WWD says that “Camuto Group, the master licensee of the Jessica Simpson Collection, has signed a deal with Destination Maternity to design, produce and distribute maternity apparel bearing Simpson’s name. The deal marks the 24th product classification for Simpson, whose fashion empire is headed toward $1 billion in retail sales by the end of this year, and includes footwear, outerwear, sunglasses, handbags, dresses, jeans wear, jewelry and sportswear.”
“The collection is designed with a vintage Seventies feel. It contains signature denim in a variety of washes and leggings, as well as vintage print tops, flowing maxis and form-fitting jersey knit dresses. Jackets, blazers and chunky relaxed sweaters and knits round out the offering. Bottoms retail from $36 to $59 for printed and sateen denim. Knit tops are $36, dresses and blouses are $59 and sweaters and capes are $69. The collection hits stores this fall and will be available in over 700 retail locations, including Motherhood Maternity, Destination Maternity, as well as Destination Maternity shop-in-shops within Macy’s.”
Christian Louboutin is “embarking on his first major brand extension, the Paris-based designer of shoes and handbags has established a joint venture with New York-based Batallure Beauty LLC to enter the beauty category. The newly formed company, Christian Louboutin Beauté, plans to launch multiple, unspecified classifications, with the first products slated to arrive on the market in late 2013. The positioning will be luxury; the distribution global.”
It’s too early to list what this cosmetic line will include, however I’m sure we can all guess red lipstick and possibly nail paint.
However, “For his part, Louboutin said his “detail-oriented” approach to shoes should translate well to beauty products and their packaging.”
But in other news, updates of the Guess vs. Guess trial are out and this is getting interesting. Fashionista says that “Gucci’s lawyer, Louis Ederer, had fingered Marc Fisher as an integral player in the “massive knockoff scheme,” even presenting evidence that the company was sending Gucci fabric samples to Guess’ fabric supplier, with the intent to copy coloring and patterns. Ederer also read aloud emails between Marc Fisher and Guess, which specifically referenced Gucci products spanning from 1995 to 2008.” However, “Vando defended the company yesterday in court, saying it was “absolutely not” ever his intention to fool customers into thinking his Guess designs were, in fact, Gucci shoes.”
But then it was said that (Guess) “the company had used “close to 100 [brands],” as reference points, “from athletic brands like Nike, Adidas and Puma to fashion brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada and D Squared.”
Sounds like Guess or the Marc Fisher reps may just want to get comfortable in court because this may be their new home. Athletic to fashion brands though, like really? What ever happened to creativity, guess it doesn’t exist at Marc Fisher.
